Well, as the OP states Has anyone ever been to (or indeed lived in) what is regarded as the 'Middle East' and how did you find it?

Morocco, does that count as Middle East? It's North Africa really, but it is seen as an Arabic country.

My father was there from 1937-1943 ... he didn't find it very welcoming ...

Has anyone been to the Middle East? Yeah, lots of people, and most of them still live there.

Jordan is very high on my list. There is a lot of the place I'd love to see.

Jordan is very high on my list. There is a lot of the place I'd love to see. Ah, yes...Petra is one of mine. But then, it is just part of a wish list which includes Merv, Isfahan, Persepolis, Palmyra, Damascus, Antioch, Ephesus, and Istanbul....the western end of the great Silk Roads. Thanks to our glorious leader, W, much of it is fucked up beyond all possible reason and will never be accessible to Americans out of uniform in my lifetime. So be it.

Jordan is supposed to be quite nice I gather - a liberal (ish) Islamic country.

Is he a character from Star Trek? He had a non-speaking, walk-on role when he was still crown prince. Evidently, King Abdullah is quite the Star Trek fan.

No, but I'd love to visit many places there when it's no longer dangerous. Morocco, does that count as Middle East? It's North Africa really, but it is seen as an Arabic country. North Africa is tied to the Middle East, but it has its own specific features. Together they are referred to as MENA (Middle East and North Africa). Morocco is more like an Arabic-Berber country actually, and most self-proclaimed Arabs in Morocco nowadays are in fact Arabized Berbers (descended from Berbers who abandoned the language of their ancestors and started speaking a language which evolved into today's Darija, i.e. Moroccan Arabic).

I read that as Beliebers, which was quite an interesting mental image.
