I hope that those of you who are American and registered to vote (and if you're not registered, why not?) have exercised your democratic rights! Here is a thread to discuss the election

I was pretty lucky, only 40 minutes to vote. Some folks that went to my polling place first thing in the morning it was an hour and a half. Those that vote after 5pm will probably be there for hours.

That's quite odd .. why don't they make more polling places? Whenever I've voted I've generally been the only person there, or at the very least one of only an extremely small handful. I don't recall ever having to queue to vote in my life.

Because apparently in America they don't want you to vote or something. Did I hear correctly they actually reduced voting hours? This is the benefit of making voting compulsory, it means the government has to make damn well sure every single person no matter where they are have ample opportunity to vote. The most I've waited is a few minutes if I go on actual voting day. Now I vote early to save that time.

Yeah, I was a little shocked, as last time I voted it was in the first hour of the place being open (I usually wander over later on in the day) and there were actually two people ahead of me! But there were two booths, so only had to wait half a minute.

I am not sure I like the idea of making voting compulsory but I don't see why people should have to wait in line for hours .. it can't be that difficult to make more polling stations.

We don't have to wait in line here, we have vote by mail. You could go to a polling place, but why? There are also plenty of places where one can drop off a ballot if you can't or don't want to pay for postage.

I've never had to wait for more than a minute or so to vote.

I've never had to wait more than a few minutes, either. This time I voted early.

Some polls were closing as early as 7pm. Here in my state they were open til 9pm. I voted around 1pm, or so ... took me about 10 minutes.

Results keep trickling in. Mrs Shake doesn't think there will be a clear answer tonight.

OK, they've called it for President Obama. This is based on projections still, mostly. Apparently, Republicans lost not just 1 or 2, but about 4 key states.
In other good news, it appears that Maine, Maryland, and Washington will allow same-sex marriages, and Minnesota will not ban it.

I have heard (and the US people here can correct me if I'm wrong) that when one votes in the US... One isn't just voting for one thing. That the forms can be quite long and that many choices have to be made, all on the one ballot. So filling out one's form can take a long time... Hence the line ups. Usually when we vote, we only have one Check to make (although there was one election where we had a referendum on voting reform attached, which was a surprise to most people as NO ONE talked about it before the election (except for a small number of us who actually Want proportional representation) (And know what it is and how it would work..)

Whoots, Hooray for Maine, Maryland and Washington, and even Minnesota...as not banning it is better than making Criminals out of good people

With a locked Congress though, that should be satisfying complex to observe from a safe distance.
