The weeks of rain and grey skies are over and when I looked out of the window this morning, everything was suddenly white. Am not entirely sure if I should cycle to university today, but probably will.

Skidding on snow could twist your knee and damage it.

It was snowing in Mooseland yesterday morning but by the time I got back to Reading it was not. I have arisen this morning to find a layer of whiteness outside. Probably have to go to work on bus and train now. It is still coming down and don't want to end up with bike stranded at the office.

It has been cold today, but I checked the weather and went to work on bike. I got some new shoes at Moose's and they are warmer than the previous ones, but still not perfect. All the snow was gone by early afternoon and it has been raining on the way home.

Yes, I believe it was.
*checks*
Yup! We hit 58ºF/14.4ºC on Saturday, and that was a record (previous was 57ºF/13.9ºC), and on Sunday we broke the previous record of 66ºF/18.9ºC when we hit 69ºF/20.6ºC.

Wow, that is warm for this time of the year. We still have a lot of snow and I prefer cycling to walking at the moment.

We a couple of centimetres last night, which was really annoying as they didn't appear to have gritted the roads so my drive to work was a bit hair raising this morning. Gone now, though.

They very often come round with the gritting lorries when I am out with Honey, which often means I have to shield her from the spray, which goes everywhere, at around her eye-line!
I do not know why they bother as the grit has usually been dissipated by the cars long before any snow or ice appears! They also seem to forget that if you put salt down and it gets wet, any resulting ice will be far more dangerous!

But in Germany, you have to do it in front of your house (or the house you live in). Otherwise, if someone slips and hurts themselves, they can sue you.

I think that in this country you enter someone's property pretty much at your own risk, unless injury was caused by something unreasonable. There is also another set of circumstances that apply. If, for example, leaves fall from a tree and someone slips on them, then no-one is to blame. If someone else moves the leaves into a pile, however, they have potentially caused the fall. What is the case if you put a sign on your gate, saying "enter at own risk" (in German, of course ).

Is your culture litigious, as in the US? I think we tend to have a more measured approach to things over here. That sounds a bit messed up, to me, about gritting outside your house. What if there's a sudden freeze overnight and you didn't even have an opportunity to do anything about it? I think I'd put a lock on the gate and a mail box and bell nearby!

Apparently, what happens over night doesn't matter, but you have to take care of it from 7 am to 8:30 pm on weekdays and on weekends from 9 am to 8 pm. Even if you're at work.

A few years ago, councils were recommending that shopkeepers did not clear the snow away from their shop fronts. If someone slips on snow that has not been cleared away then no one is at fault. If someone slips on a footpath where the snow has been partly cleared away leaving an icy footpath then it is the fault of the person who didn't do a very good job. Something like that.
