Referendums are such a blunt instrument, with just 'Yes' or 'No' answers. While it's great to get direct public involvement, the issues are rarely so black and white and yet the process promotes polarisation, as we've seen with Brexit.

They can be useful, but most of the time the questions isn't even properly asked, so people don't really know what it is they are expected to answer. And since people are proud herd animals, they pretend that they do know and follow the leader shouting the loudest.

Ironically, Hungary is seen as an Eastern European country here on the lines of Poland and Hungarians are not considered welcome by the Brexit brigade .

Yes, Hungary belongs to the Visegrad group (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia). They consider themselves White Christian Europeans and as such they demand the right to travel and work freely within EU (and UK too). But the refugees are Muslims and have therefore no right to stay in Hungary. There are very strong nationalistic feelings in Hungarym encouraged by the regime.
