Shake posted a good - and humorous - link that has helped me to understand precisely what is going on there but some of it is still going rather over my head. I've got BBC news 24 on right now to try and understand more. What I can understand is that there are desperate people there who are urgently in need of help. Are we helping?

To be honest, I don't know what to believe about that conflict anymore. I don't know which side I should take either. On the one hand you have the Assad regime which was involved in torturing civilians (I have the testimony of a Syrian friend of mine who spent months in one of Assad's camps without trial - he's now in Germany), and on the other the Syrian opposition which is mostly, if not totally, composed of radical or terrorist organizations. And the countries backing one side or the other are doing so for their own national interests.

Hey! I'm good! Taking a small break after a hectic 3 months. I'll have to plunge back in in a few days though. How are things going on your side?

No, I'll keep my facebook deactivated at least until I'm done with my dissertation (so probably for another two or three months).

I recently talked with a Syrian, with the help of an Arabic speaking translator (my friend Islam). They live in Aleppo and told me that they hate both ISIS and Assad .. that their revolution was intended to be against Assad but that ISIS have taken over and now they are stuck between the two of them and facing Russian and American aggression. They just want to live freely, in a democracy. Is that too hard?

Many Russians and Americans also want to live freely in democracies, and it's getting harder.

I suspect most Russians would prefer Putin's authoritarian rule to a bumbling mediocre democracy.
