Gilbert had to be put to sleep last night. We took him to the vet because he seemed weak and hadn't really been eating or drinking during the day. He'd had some tumours which couldn't be removed, but was fine for quite a long time and then deteriorated very quickly. The vet still offered to give him painkillers for a few more days, seeing that it was not easy for us to learn that there was nothing they could do, but when I asked him what would be best for Gilbert, he said it would be best if Gilbert was allowed to just go. It was sad, even for the vet, I think. Now we have only Cotton and Spotty left. And I miss Gilbert!

I saw your post on Facebook.
It's always sad when animals die but I think you took the best decision. Animals usually cover up their pain and I'm sure letting them go is the best thing for them.

Poor Gilbert. Poor Claudia and Frank. Also perhaps poor Cotton and Spotty - are they going to miss Gilbert?

We have adopted an elderly, male piggie. It happened pretty fast and we named him Brillo. Police took him out of an appartment when the owner ended up in hospital. The fur was one dirty, knotted mass, the claws had curled up several times because they hadn't been cut for so long and the paws were badly calloused. He has sich a horrible story we just had to adopt him. We still miss Gilbert a lot, but it's nice that we can give Brillo a good home.

Photos? After you've managed to trim his claws and untangle his fur?

Photos? After you've managed to trim his claws and untangle his fur? They did that in the animal shelter since he has been there for a while. We got a clean, cute piggie with trimmed claws and fur that had grown nicely after they'd had to cut it all off when he arrived there.

Poor Gilbert. Lucky Brillo though, to have found such a good home. How is he settling in?

Brillo has been settling in very well. The ladies have been a little annoyed by his flirting, other than that it has been surprisingly easy. he is an adorable piggie!

Frank came up with the name, btw. I think it confuses Germans, though.

We relied on Brillo pads to clean our pots and pans at scout camp. Wood fires would cover them in soot and Brillo pads were the only thing to get the soot off the outside and the burnt food on the inside

Frank thinks Brillo's fur looks a bit like that.
