So...With the disappearance of long-time veteran Ingrid and the subsequent brutal decapitation of Dora, I am left with two hens.
They are young hens, having completed their first molt this past fall. They are green egg layers (Americauna, we call them).
Normally, at this point, I would adopt a new pair of birds to bring my flock back up to four hens and every hen comes with a buddy.
But, I'd already run in to some issues. It is a bit difficult, and can get expensive, to have somebody 'hen sit' your birds when you go away on holiday. We are bound for Europe again next spring and expect to do some on-continent road trips and having chooks ties a person down.
So, I decided to rehome the remainder of the flock, namely May & Day. They have been claimed by a woman who lives in Hillsboro, on the western edge of the metropolitan area, where she has an area prepared to rebuild her old flock. She's getting a pair of freebies from me and another poster (on our cult blog) offered up another trio. So my girls will be moving to the suburbs.
On top of all that, Swimmer is about to reclaim her farm. She is exasperated with being a landlord. With living in the city. With having to climb too damned many stairs each and every day. With living with me. She is ready to go back to commuting an hour or more each day to live in the exurbs. I may have the opportunity to establish two sets of hens, obtain a contender for a rooster, and try to breed my own 'olive eggers'. This is also where the possibility of burros hoves in to view.
But that's all longer term. As of Sunday, I will no longer be a chicken tender.
Damn, I cannot wait to unwire my back garden. It's been this way since before the chooks...it started with the bunnies.
