Nothing dangerous. I've done a bit of rock climbing but I wouldn't call it an extreme sport.

I fly hang gliders. But it's not really dangerous. There are plenty of 'ordinary' activities that are statistically much more dangerous than hang gliding.

Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by extreme sports.

What does extreme sports mean?I certainly wouldn't do base-jumping or something like that. But I di swordfencing, does that count as extreme sport?

I think extreme sports are completely unnecessary and uninteresting.
I would not think fencing comes anywhere close to being an extreme sport when you are doing it at your sort of level Kaylee. I think any professional top athletes are extreme sporting.

Some would say fencing is an extreme sport if it has a high level of physical exertion and inherent danger. I guess it depends what you are wearing and how sharp the sword is.

The swords aren't sharp, otherwise we'd all be missing a few limbs already.

I guess I was thinking of things like BASE jumping Not sure if I'd count hang gliding as extreme, tho I'd not fancy itself as don't like heights. BASE jumping has a fairly high fatality rate tho

BASE jumping has a fairly high fatality rate tho I know, I saw a documentary on it. That's why I can't understand that young, healthy people would do that. They are knowingly putting their lives at risk.

I think the young tend to do it while they still have that invincible attitude to life.

I read not long ago about a female base jumper who was pregnant and who died when her chute failed to open. I just don't undestand why take the risk, pregnant or not. Parachuting yes, I can understand people enjoying that. But BASE jumping is just TOO risky .. too many people die.

"BASE jumping has an overall fatality rate estimated at about one fatality per sixty participants," says Wiki.
BASE jumping: Buildings, Antennas, Spans (bridges) and Earth (cliffs). If ever there was a naff acronym...

Jesus one in sixty? That is even higher than I thought. Why on earth anyone would want to take that risk is beyond me

Cave diving is the most dangerous 'sport' I know of. One of my hang gliding friends used to do cave dive too, but he died doing it. He used to tell me about all the rules they had: making sure that there was always air in reserve (allowing for decompression stops when necessary); never swimming into a narrowing too small to turn round in (because it's very difficult to swim backwards when wearing flippers and diving bottles), and so on. Then he'd tell you how his team had discovered a new route that meant taking off all their diving gear (air bottles etc.) and pushing them through a small hole connecting two underwater caves - then squeezing themselves through the hole before putting the gear back on - and only making it back to the surface with two minutes of air remaining... I asked him, 'What about the safety rules you told me about?' 'Oh! You'd never discover any new routes if you stuck to all those rules' was his reply. I don't know the official figures, but my feeling is that cave diving is several times more dangerous than BASE jumping.

I've read about cave diving but did not know it was that dangerous. I remember thinking that I'd never be able to do it cos I don't like either heights (going down or up) or confined spaces but I've seen some incredible pictures that make me understand why, at least, some people would want to. BASE jumping is different tho.. you're not discovering anything, all you're doing is playing a game with your life for an adrenaline rush

This wingsuit base jumping looks p. cool (though v. dangerous)

The problem with adrenalin rushes is that you have to do more and more extreme or longer things to get them. Avoiding death is all well and good until you fail to do it!

This wingsuit base jumping looks p. cool (though v. dangerous) That's alright ... I'll stick to Soarin'! There is YouTube video of the visuals from the ride, but you don't get the full effect, especially since they make the experience really good by adding smells in a couple of places (pines, and orange grove).

Parachuting yes, I can understand people enjoying that. But BASE jumping is just TOO risky .. too many people die. Someone would do it while being pregnant? I can't believe that, she killed her baby as well. To be honest, I struggle to feel pity with those people who die or get severely injured when doing it. If you gamble with your life, that's what you have to expect.

Yeah it was supposed to be her last jump before the baby was born. I would have worried about miscarrying to be honest.

The closest to extreme I think I've even vaguely considered is skydiving jumping out of a perfectly good airplane.

Well, with a normal parachute that might be alright - although I don't think I would do that unless it was an emergency.
