Just been to the forumer website to see if there were any updates. As with the other day, they are not taking new registrations so I can't say anything. But they are quite obviously not paying attention to anyone's complaints about this matter. Most of their servers seem to be reporting problems of the same kind we've experienced and all we are getting is 'it's been reported to the technicians'. Pathetic .. I hope they go under.

But that would destructicate Lfe in Mordor ... which at the moment is not affected so at least one of the servers must be working properly.

I have to admit it makes me mad as well. That's not a way to treat their customers.

I wonder how much money they make anyway, since we don't pay for using it and most of us have things like ad-blocker.

They get money from guests who do not use ad-blocker.

The ironic thing is that I wouldn't use an ad-blocker if they didn't put such annoying or resource-hungry content on there. Without ad-block, my computer would go from 50% CPU usage and free memory to 100% continuously (with things timing out or being unusable jittery) and no free memory because of the huge number of animations, videos and static banners.
I also block all those "like" "+1" "digg this" and so on where possible. To me, these things are on a par with the news channels running people's mindless texts about current events along the bottom of the screen.

I have an ad-block and script-block. I basically have to enable everything to see a full website. Saves me a lot of loading time, ads, intrusive other stuff.

I have ad block but I only block the annoying ads, basically, anything that moves.

Script block is very useful when you visit sites to watch TV and stuff too.

I have never thought to use such software ... I just don't register what the ads are saying.

Are people getting ads on this page then, or elsewhere here? I'm not, but I don't think I have any adblockers.

I have no ads here and the ones on EF1 were often a source of amusement, so I don't really mind.

Amusement you say *raises one eyebrow*

I have never thought to use such software ... I just don't register what the ads are saying. Their presence in itself would not bother me, but the ads on the pages I am viewing would try to use somewhere in the region of 5000% of the CPU capability and 1000% of the memory of my computer, which obviously makes it rather unresponsive and makes everything work like the old forum currently is!

Do you think that the advertising is the root cause of the Forumer server issue, then?

I think the root cause is search engines. They're twenty times as active as ordinary members.

No, I think this is probably something else, not heavy traffic.

The search engines probably didn't expand 10 fold or whatever. Something needs to have changed suddenly to make that change.

The search engines probably didn't expand 10 fold or whatever. Something needs to have changed suddenly to make that change. There were two significant search engines hammering EF when I last looked. One from China, which is a notorious search engine known to steal bandwidth, and a supercomputer in a Californian university (I forget which). Both are likely to be new.

I meant the adverts were causing my computer to grind to a halt, but I suppose a new search engine hammering the server, requesting every single page link it could find, with no regard to bandwidth use could give the server a very hard time. I dread to think how many million pages it could be ploughing through. I am amazed at how much my web server at home is hit by Google and other search engines. There seems to be a low level of activity all day now.

How can you even see that?

I have a box with blinky lights on it and access logs. I can also see things like spam bots trying to send me fake e-mails and people trying to log into my computers. I've not looked recently, but it lists a lot of the failed stuff and it's amazing to see the lists of usernames and passwords it tries. Last time I checked it out there was lots of things like user:harrypotter password:dumbledore. Obviously works (or at least did then) enough to be worth trying on every computer you encounter. This is why you should not have your computer set with no password or anything simple or common.
