I received a call from a firm who wanted to replace my windows this morning. When I told the caller that I already had someone in mind a brief conversation ensued and he ended up calling me an asshole and an idiot. I could have done without that.

That certainly is not very professional.

Not very professional and if he ever thinks you'll use his firm he's out of his mind. Would you like me to hire a hitman?

Steve, you can and should report that.

No, I can't. He didn't tell me which company he was calling from. I did 1471 but of course the number was not given. All I know is that his name was Peter.

Well, if it is any consolation he has a shitty job trying to sell stuff over the phone that people don't want to buy and was undoubtedly having a bad and unproductive day. Not an excuse, mind.

well no. I can sympathise with people who are forced to do those jobs cos yeah, they must get a lot of rudeness. But swearing at someone they've just disturbed for no reason is not cool

Probably not worth it, but the police would be able to trace the call if they needed to. The phone network does keep a list of all calls; it's only you that doesn't get to see who it was. I think if you reported it they'd probably think they had better things to do with their time.

The conversation went something like this (slightly abbreviated):
Him: Hello, it's Peter calling about your windows. Me: Oh yes, thanks I'd been meaning to call you. Are you the gentleman who called round to give us an estimate? Him: No, I haven't been round to your house. Me: Oh, well thanks for calling but I've already got an estimate. Him: Well, I can give you a cheaper estimate. Me: No thanks, it will be quite alright. Him: What are you talking about? Me: I won't be needing your estimate. Him: *raises voice* What? You're not calling around to get several estimates? What an asshole. Me: Bye. Him: Idiot.
I'm not terribly bothered by the conversation, not enough to report it. As for getting several estimates, I would normally do this but not from a cold caller. I choose who gives me an estimate not them.

Wow, that is rude. I once got a call from someone advertising something. He started by asking me about how much we paid for electricity. I just said that we're quite happy with our supplier of electricity. He said they didn't offer electricity and I said thanks but I still wasn't interested and suddenlky he yelled at me and hung up!

Does Germany have an option for you to go on a list that prohobits cold callers from calling you? We call it the telephone preference list. It doesn't stop them calling.

To be honest I am afraid to answer phone calls. Most of the time they are about some promotional events and they want to send us invitations which I never agree with. But I am the kind of person that just can't hang people up in the middle of a 'conversation', so I always wait for the callers to finish their tedious monologues and then answer with a short 'Thank you but no thanks'. I have more and more of phobia towards phone calls.

I'm with you CB. I hate answering the phone and I do find it difficult to get rid of cold callers without feeling I've just been extremely rude.

I just say, 'I really don't want to discuss this: good-bye' and put the 'phone down. Easy.

Not if anyone mistakes him for a cold-caller, by the look of it.

cold callers are the one sort of callers I never have trouble with. Also, you can report a company who calls you whilst you're on the Black List.

I always end up in conversations I don't want to be in... Do you know Jesus, are you saved? Also, you can report a company who calls you whilst you're on the Black List. Not in the UK. You have to know who you are reporting before you can report them but the cold callers are anonymous. They withhold their numbers and give fake names so you can't identify them. Until you show real, genuine interest.

I wouldn't want you to choke on your sandwich but if you do, Jesus can save you.
