I bought petrol today and wanted to write my mileage on to the receipt. I asked if I could borrow the guy's pen to just pop outside to look at the odometer, write it down and bring the pen straight back, which would have taken all of about 30 seconds... he wouldn't let me take it, even though my motorbike was immediately outside the door to the shop! What did he think I was going to do with it?!? It was a cheap (like about 10p) disposable Biro! It immediately reminded me of Kids in the Hall: My Pen!

I don't lend my pen to pupils either. They always promise to give it back and I'm sure most of them would manage it just fine, but it happened to me too often that they didn't give it back or broke it or accidentally chewed on it, etc.

Maybe, but if they wanted to borrow it for 30 seconds and never be out of your sight, would you do it? I can't imagine any pen-requiring emergencies that could have arisen that couldn't have waited that long!

No, I don't lend it to pupils period.

How about lending a school-owned, cheap, disposable Biro to a "responsible" 40-year-old for 30 seconds?

Would have to think about it.

When I was at work I was always well organised and I always had a pen. People used to lose their's and pinch mine. I do have some sympathy.

You could always have told him that you weren't going to pay for the petrol then

Don't think that argument would have stood up, really. Plus, it was the receipt I wanted to write on. I wouldn't have been out of his sight for a single second. The whole front of the garage is glass and, as I said previously, my bike was immediately outside the main door.
In retrospect, I think I would have sarcastically offered my helmet to him as a bond to return his 10p pen!

As a colleague left, we saw the pens he had collected over the years. I was shocked to see he had over 300 pens.
