Awful ... whether you are religious or not this is a beautiful historic building and it is devastating to see it in flames.

Yes, very sad.

Did you see the drone shot? It looked like the apocalypse.
It is a building that everybody knows, it has an important place in literature and the city of Paris. So most people would think it pretty sad. Having said that, I have already seen a lot of funny memes.

I am finding a lot of the memes a bit inappropriate really

I'm hoping to to get to a stage where the memes are funny, now that the fire is properly out and reconstruction can start. Well, surveying the damage can start.
Partly because we have to have humour in the face of difficult things. And partly because I made a meme right when the news broke and I was thinking it was a small well-contained fire and I don't want to feel guilty about that.

I will!
I can't believe a billion dollars has already been donated to it's reconstruction. Why doesn't the catholic church use it's gazillions to pay for it?

Does the Catholic Church in France have gazillions it can spare? The Vatican Bank has billions of euros but that money belongs to individual investors, I believe. Churches in the UK are universally skint.

It could sell off some less important real estate if it doesn't have enough. But with it's tax exempt status and not paying out hardly anything for all the child sex abuse victims, they should have plenty.
