This is pretty much what I expected when the Tories got back in, under this coalition travesty. It pretty much boils down to the usual thing of the country being run by a number of people who have no concept of the real world impact of what they are doing and just see everything as numbers to be "corrected". In a world where the economy is being methodically destroyed and the amount of jobs is going down, where are these jobs they they think people should be taking? Yes, things may need changing, but this really is not the way to do it! It's like taking to a crowd with a machine gun because there is a pick-pocket operating there. In amongst the carnage they have "completed their objective".

I am just waiting for euthanasia for anyone over 70. That would solve a lot of problems.

I am just waiting for euthanasia for anyone over 70. That would solve a lot of problems. It's called the Care Pathway.

Workhouses?
You know even the DAILY MAIL has to admit that there just aren't any jobs out there.. yesterday it was carrying a story showing four thousand people queuing at a new shopping mall to apply for the paltry number of jobs that there were. And yet still, benefits are being cut to the bone. Where are these people meant to find work?

It reminds me rather of Mark Studdock in That Hideous Strength. Studdock had a background in sociology and felt that he 'knew' what the suffering of the poor was, and what their limitations were (mostly caused by being feckless and stupid). But when confronted with the reality that had hitherto been merely academic for him he realised that he could not 'stomach' the things that he had previously advocated.

I don't remember that part --but then it's been awhile since I read that most depressing of Lewis books.

It's my favourite of his, apart from Till We Have Faces. It wasn't a big aspect of it, just a couple of throwaway sentences... that it is easy to theoretically believe that something is acceptable - workhouses, involuntary euthanasia, vivisection - when one is not actually present in the room where these things are taking place.

yes it's a wonderful read and a stand alone .. you do not need to reread the other two to appreciate it.

Did you know that there are two editions. There is the original full edition and an abridged version written, or at least sanctioned by Lewis himself.

No I didn't I did find an abridged version online once but presumed that the person who had posted it had done it

I used to have both but when I bought the full version I think the other version went to a charity shop. Wished I'd hung on to it now.
