We've discovered that the government has upped the subsidies on isolating your home, so we're now looking into getting a sunboiler so we won't have to heat all our water using gas, saving a lot of money. I'm also looking into isolation of the roof and walls and we have an old, drafty huge window that needs replacing. Expensive but it will save a lot of money in the long term and is good for the environment.
Do your governments offer subsidies for this sort of work? Would you have the work done if possible?

I assumed your title was a reference to coronavirus ...

There have been subsidies for solar panels, and I'm pretty sure for insulation as well although not very much in the latter case. I think the subsidies were suddenly withdrawn sometime last year though ... no, it was the opportunity to get paid for excess electricity generated and put back into the network, the "feed-in tariff".

Here the subsidies were upped because of corona actually, to stimulate the building sector and take advantage of the fact that everyone started cleaning and diy-ing their house during the lockdown. So the thread is somewhat corona related

I think there may be subsidies her, but we don't own a house, so I have never really looked into it. My grandmother and uncle own the house next to their farm, though, and I think they are by law required to take care of isolation.

You might like to research the question of subsidies and persuade the landlord it would be in his or her interest to make use of them... just as long as they don't put the rent up.

Our landlord had the entire house renovated and insulated 5 years ago.

Ah, so he's not going to do any more renovations soon.

My house had its cavity walls insulated for free a few years ago. Out of the blue, someone turned up at the door and said he'd arrange it. I thought it was probably a scam, but I thought as long as I don't have to sign a contract or hand over any money, I'd play along. Anyway, a few days later a special lorry with lots of hoses and pumps, plus a team of guys turned up: the guys drilled lots of little holes in the mortar and pumped some sort of fluffy stuff from the lorry through the hoses to fill the wall cavities. Some of the insulation overflowed up into the loft - it looks a bit like duvet filling. They filled in all the holes they drilled - it's very hard to see where the holes were now.
I've not really noticed any reduction in the heating bills - but I suppose the price of gas goes up all the time, so it's difficult to tell. I guess these guys were offering to do all the houses in the area, and some sort of government grant paid them for the work? I don't know.

Our gas bill is quite substantial compared to our electricity bill. Our bill also shows how your usage compares to others in similar situations and our gas bill is way higher.
Today we had someone who knows about isolation over to check our house. As it turns out our walls are isolated, which I didn't expect, but our roof isn't at all! Now I definitely didn't expect that!

Our gas bill is quite substantial compared to our electricity bill. Do you mean over the whole year? I seem to have hardly used any gas over the summer months, so I suppose the heating takes a lots more of it than hot water and cooking.

Yeah, the average. We use a lot of hot water though.

Hence the comparison to people in a similar home and family situation

Here it’s more like tax breaks unless your wording for tax breaks is subsidies where you are.
