I put on my winter coat for the first time this season since it hit -5C this morning, but I regretted it since by the time I got a block away I was boiling. I thought of all the other coats I have and was a bit shocked at how many I own. On the other hand, Montreal weather goes from about -30 C in the winter to about +30 C in the summer so it's not like I can get away with one coat. These are the coats I wear regularly: light summer jacket, heavier summer jacket, summer rain jacket --water resistant, rain jacket waterproof (for dog walking in the rain); light early fall/late spring jacket, heavier fall jacket, water resistant trench coat (casual) water resistant trench coat (formal); late fall/ early spring down jacket, light down coat, wool jacket; early winter coat (for funerals etc); winter coat --good for down to -30 but too hot really for the -5 we have today. Today I should have worn my wool jacket, but it's missing a button. Time to buy another jacket! Too many pieces of outerwear? I do wear t hem all...

You could just hibernate for the winter, staying inside the house where it's cosy and warm.
I have a light summer jacket, a dress coat that's good for weddings and funerals and a moderately heavy winter coat. I don't intend going anywhere when it's -30°C (or even -5°C which is about as cold as it usually gets in Stockport).
I don't have enough wardrobe space for any more coats.

I live alone, and I have an entire closet that's only coats (and boots)!
Hibernation sounds great (if only I didn't have to walk my dog 3 times a day...)

I have a couple of coats that I hardly wear. Mostly I alternate between two fleeces.
When I have to deal with -18°C I'll wear the fleece plus a jumper plus a shirt plus a T-shirt. Plus gloves and a scarf and a beanie. And thermal long-johns under my trousers. Wait, I also have a sleeveless jacket (gilet I think they are called) which I can add to the combination, and is good for less warm summer days.

I seem to have too many coats as well. A warm winter coat, a less warm winter coat, a wool coat and a slightly more fancy wool coat for less cold autumn weather, a proper rain coat, a light coat that works as a rain coat as well if it doesn't get too bad, a light Trenchcoat for when I need to look professional, a light summer coat, a leather jacket and two different kinds of jeans jackets. Too much, definitely, but I do wear them all as well. Our little guy seems to have just as many jackets, and Frank has several as well.

I have a grey professional-looking raincoat, but I can't remember when I last wore it.

Do you mean, it looks as though it itself is professional, or that the person wearing it is likely to be?

I suppose the kind of thing that might be trying to suggest the wearer is a professional
Back in the days when suits and ties were routine for work ...

I first met the relaxation from suits to casual clothes in Dusseldorf in Germany. I spent some time working for Nokia and, as a contractor, I always wore a suit until the lead manager tactfully told me not to.

Hehe, my colleagues just about don't wear hawaiian shirts and shorts, but it's close. That's IT for you.
