I cannot believe we do not have an entire thread dedicated to the ongoing controversy over using pineapple on pizza. To be explicit and exact, a "Hawaiian" pizza in the local parlance here dealing with pizza, is made with a standard crust and sauce, then laden with thin sliced ham, or Canadian bacon, and slices of pineapple (or chunks). I think they add some smelly cheese, too, like Romano or Asiago. Anyway, it is one of those things which most folks have a strong opinion, pro or con. The title fairly clearly delineates my leanings. In my search for a thread, I stumbled across a couple of mentions of pineapple on pizza. Evidently, this heresy is widespread in Finland.

LOL the only thing not appealing about that pizza - other than the little people - is olives. I like pineapple on pizza

Pizza has cheese. All pizza is an abomination.

Speaking of cheese and pineapple, the other day we had pineapple, thoroughly processed sausage and cheese on dark rye bread. The only thing not Finnish about it was that the cheese was cheddar.

It was great. That one is what we always eat in our mashed stews. Stamppot boerenkool, stamppot hutspot, stamppot andijvie, etc.

I like the look of the sausage but not the bread

The bread is probably a Finnish tradition designed to last all winter before the introduction of refrigerators and supermarkets.

I've heard of it but never tasted it. I don't like dark bread very much.
How are you guys anyway? I've not seen Miisa for ages!

Not s fan of Hawaiisn pizza, but I also don't think it's an abomination. So no strong opinion here.

How are you guys anyway? I've not seen Miisa for ages! Have you actually seen Miisa in the pre-Internet sense? We are fine. Well relatively - Miisa's had a cough which she seems to have decided not to get better from very quickly. She needs to visit EF more often, but says that her laptop has problems with it.

I'm just imagining those vast fields of pineapple, growing with lush abandon just outside the northern suburbs of Helsinki...

mmmmmmmm ... fields of pineapple *best Homer voice*
I was quite surprised when I first saw pineapples growing. I had thought they grew on trees.

Nope, shrubbery. Rather like agave plants.
Now, see, I read the wiki on pineapples and they have evidently been successfully propagated, raised, and produced fruit in places like Moscow (by Kate the Great's gardeners), using large, and very expensive, greenhouses which came to be known a 'pineries'. So, it could be that Finland is successfully raising its own pineapple resources in-country, but I'd think it would be a major investment in sturdy glass structures to provide enough native pineapple for all those sausage, cheese and pineapple sammiches.

Who knows? With the advances in glass and durable energy they might be able to produce them at less cost than importing them from wherever they get them from. Measured over time of course. The initial investment will be hefty to say the least. But creating a highrise greenhouse with artifical suns and shelftechniques should easily be able to produce enough for all of Finland. It's not like it houses billions of people.
