I have not seen it properly, but the main difference there is that it's not being made at a rate of about two and a half hours week, all year, with almost no development of anything in it. Every episode I have seen of Eastenders, no matter how many years apart, seem to be the same, all about conflict and tedium! I think if they wrote all the initial characters back in, as though they had just arrived, they could go back to episode one without anyone noticing!

well that's deliberate, I think! So that if you miss an episode (or a hunder) you don't feel as if you can no longer watch the show!

it doesn't matter if you miss years of the show. A couple of long lost children and/or relatives will have appeared, but the basic characters are all still there and the plot just never changed.
