Whilst I am not actually watching the matches any more than I did the men's matches in the last World Cup (male) I am really very chuffed that suddenly women;s football is a Thing. What, precisely, stopped it from being so in the last God knows how many hundreds of years?

It's too corrupt for women.

Fun true story: the Dutch national basketball girls team were slated to win the European championship whereas the boys team were deemed lucky to get past the first round. The boys team got to go all expenses paid by the Dutch basketball association. The girls team had to pay everything themselves. After a lot of national protests the DBA decided to pay half of the expenses...

That sucks but not unexpected. We lost in the finals. I actually did watch most of the game. The women still did better than the male team have for a long while

The women still did better than the male team have for a long while I was very impressed by the standard of their play and wonder how they would fare if they did actually play against a men's team. Last year, some of the women's teams in the European cup were embarrassingly bad but the England team were impressive, especially Mary Earps, the goalkeeper. Better, I would say, than many lower league male goalkeepers.

I don't think that they would fare very well against a male team but .. that's the way that it is. Against a women's team, they were fantastic.

The terrestrial TV channels can no longer afford to broadcast much top class sport - football, cricket, motor racing, and others have mostly sold their broadcasting rights to Sky or BT Sport.
Some sports or events are required by law to be broadcast on non-subscription channels, so things like the World Cup in football are still viewable on BBC or ITV - but that's only one tournament every four years.
So the BBC decided to start broadcasting women's football, cricket, and rugby matches, which were available relatively cheaply - and to publicize and hype up the coverage by mentioning it in all their news programs too.
The problem is that if it becomes popular enough, then Sky and BT Sport will outbid the BBC, so women's football, cricket, etc., will also only be viewable by those who pay subscriptions to Sky Sports or whatever.
I suppose if and when that happens, the BBC will begin to hype up and cover other currently little-shown sports, so we'll start to get lots of news about women's hockey, lacrosse, and netball matches...
