"Song of Susan, Lost Queen of Narnia"


Alone on the edge of the front row pew,
My family packaged neatly in coffins before me,
I lean my ear toward each lifeless body as the
Noise of tired hymns fades beneath a silent voice,
The corpses of my siblings, dressed in their Sunday best
And enthroned on a bed of flowers
Like kings and queens of another world, crying
"Don't you remember..." the smell of camphor,
A tree of iron, a red breasted robin--
They are no more than childish dreams
And I no more than an ordinary English girl,
One face they called pretty among the countless faces
Scrambling for a place above the rest;
But here, alone, clinging to this branch,
Staring wildly at five sealed caskets below,
I can go no further and the wolves have come again
Snapping at my heels and eager to devour;
Soon I will fall to them and you who once saved me
Flutter not an eyelash, so cozy on your bed of flowers;
Do you not see that I am drowning in the swells
Of fashionable items that paint my figure and
Cram my wardrobe so full that I cannot see the
Back of it, it's the sign of being grownup, you know;
But now I am young and so hot with
Fear that perspiration licks my forehead like the tongue of a
Lion, only this time there's no warmth,
No richness, no sweet strain of music;
Just stones in a graveyard, and an empty table, and
I'm falling, down, swiftly like an arrow that missed its
Target and will never again find itself ensconced in the
Softness of a human heart. For all are dead, and here I am
Hurled into this endless sway of winter, where every
Cry is strangled at its root, but for one,
Unvoiced prayer that wearily rises to Him
Who traverses worlds to still haunt me.
