Col bought me a fluffy heating mat - it is awesome (the cats think so too . I bought him a wearable fleecy blanket. Between the two of them we are able to have the heating only for a bare minimum time and level.

I hope it's a comfort while you're not well.

Have you had any snow yet?

|

Post by Kye on Nov 30, 2023 2:36:28 GMT
A few flakes, but nothing on the ground yet. It looks like there will be rain for the next couple of days and some snow on the weekend.

Do you find snow easier to deal with in that climate?

They're probably prepared for it in Canada to. Here, snow is easier to deal with when you have, as we do: - snow ploughs coming round at 05:30 (or sometime, at least) clearing the roads and pavements and apartment block driveways - grit on the roads and pavements - winter tyres - proper boots, trousers, coat, hat, scarf and gloves - in extreme cold, thermal underwear, regular trousers, waterproof and insulated overtrousers, mittens on top of your gloves, and a balaclava under your fur hat
When it's freshly fallen and the ploughs haven't got to it yet, it's more difficult to drive or walk in. When it's slushy ... as it is endlessly during spring ... it's pretty unpleasant. The worst is when the packed snow melts and refreezes into smooth ice, and then gets fresh snow on top so you can't see where the treacherous bits are.

Yep, that sounds familiar, Joe.
Here's a clip of snow clearing about 2 blocks from my daughter's apartment:

That seems to be mostly hassle with parked cars - and narrow pavements / sidewalks.
I imagine it's like that in the central parts of the older cities in Finland, but since where we live is mostly more recently built and more spacious, there's almost never anyone parked in the way. All the paved pathways and cycleways are wide enough to take a plough.

We haven't had any snow to speak of in years here in Cumbria. I miss it.

So true!

Oh yes. Especially if there's a bit of a thaw after the snowplough has left a bank behind your car, then refrozen overnight. Now you have a slippery speed bump in the way.
