We all normally have comfort foods that make us feel good and nostalgic or whatever. But there are also some non food related things that also produce the same sort of results. One I find is watching detective shows - particiularly Colombo. I think it's partly because one of the first times I was sick here in NL, DG picked up a Colombo dvd as a gift and we watched it so I associate it with being looked after. And then also it's so easy to watch, because you already know who did it, it's one of the few tv shows that does not leave you guessing (except for how Columbo is going to figure it out). You don't have to strain your brain trying to pull all the connections together you can just sit back and enjoy the experience. It's literally one of those cases of enjoying the journey and not the destination. I do also like some other detective series, they are all British ones. Most other US detective stuff is CSI rubbish which does not offer a nice slow pace that allows for any comfort. Tonight Frost is on and I'm looking forward to watching that, which is what inspired me to write this thread!

Red Dwarf and Doctor Who Also after my dad died my mum gave me two of his dressing gowns. They are enormous (even tho my dad was rather frail) and made of lovely thick fleecy stuff .. perfect for cold nights. Also oddly comforting that they were my dad's too.

Two categories, slightly different:
Comfort food; Person of Interest, Miranda, Doctor Who and the Whedonverse.
Guilty pleasures; Extreme Makeover: Home edition, Is It Real, Embarrassing bodies.

I found Bodyshock a guilty pleasure. Guilty because ultimately I knew that I was just watching it as a sort of modern day freak show, and not for any scientific reason

I watch "What Not to Wear" and "Say Yes to the Dress" as comfort tv. *blush* No need to blush. I love those two shows! I actually think that What not to Wear is quite insiteful. The two hosts are particularly enthusiastic about making people look good in clothes rather than being enthusiastic about being hosts on TV which a lot of TV personalities seem to be, especially in US reality tv series. And I've learnt all sorts of stuff, not just what to wear but I've discovered that other people aren't going to judge you and remember you for what you were before but what you are now.

Non-comfort food: Stargate SG1 which I used to watch with my sister, Gilmore Girls, the novel "Not A Sparrow Falls". Guilty pleasures: Germany's Next Topmodel, Supersize vs. Superskinny on YouTube, The Messie Team (das Messie Team).

Among things to watch, QI and Have I Got News For You and programmes like that can generally make me feel good when I'm not. Sometimes I watch TV downloaded to my tablet on the train and have to suppress giggles to avoid disturbing the gloom and grumpiness of all the other passengers.

I love QI. And I saw that Tim Minchin is going to be a guest in the second episode of the new series. Not sure when they start to air that. Hope it's soon so I can watch it!

No Doctor Who and many other English programs on Polish TV, or we don't have many channels to choose from. So no comfort TV for me. I basically stop watching TV. I just listen to music and read a book (mainly detective stories) when I need to relax.

I mostly tend to use DVDs over TV these days, the amount of stuff on worth watching has dwindled so much in the last ten years or so that it's now slowly getting to the point of not bothering with the TV stuff. I am certainly not paying the inflated subscription prices for the extra TV channels.
I now listen to a lot more Radio than I used to. Again, almost entirely BBC.

Comfort stuff: girlie films, chick lit (hate the term!), most books though when I'm really in need of quick comforting, it will be the film
Guilty pleasure: chick lit of no substance whatsoever (you read for an hour and you have experienced a problem and a solution and it's all happy happy)
I'm tired and need to zombie out-stuff: what not to wear, yes to the dress, shows like that. If I'm really very tired I can't watch films, too complicated. Even if I have seen it a dozen times already.

Comfort stuff to read: definitely Bill Bryson, it's such feelgood fare. Or Jane Austen. Or any historical novel. Comfort stuff to watch: Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility... in fact anything with bonnets. If I'm feeling stressed or depressed, I just want to disappear into another time.

Do you have the Pride and Prejudice BBC mini series? It's really very good! Much better than the film. There is also a recent Sense and Sensibility mini series. I like the film a lot because of the actors, but the series is good too.

We probably could if we paid a lot of extra money, am not sure there. But it would be so much money that we'd have to pay every month it's easier to buy DVD's.

We were just wondering about that. Our tv is a bit shiite in terms of colours, so we were watching the Dutch public TV broadcast online.
We noticed it says below:
Funny too as our basic tv package includes BBC 1 and 2 and BBC world and a few German (like ARD and ZDF) and Belgian networks (both the public ones I think) as well.

It does depend on your provider. Not all of them include BBC1 and 2. Fortunately my current one does.
