As the penguin correctly points out, they are The Gumby's from Monty Python's Flying Circus.

I don't think the Gumbys were satirizing any real people in particular, they just were the Gumbys. Riiiiiight.... Nobody in particular....nobody at all. Just like here in the US, where the Clampetts do not mock anybody at all, no sir.

Well, I thought it was Monty Python, which is John Cleese et al. The thing is, Monty Python satirizes the cultural icons, so I'm curious as to what it is that is being mocked with the rolled up trousers. Maybe the answer cannot be provided absent the other aspects, the long sleeved white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, multicolored sleeveless sweatervest, the braces worn over all, the rubber Wellies, doo-rag, cropped moustache, and troglodytic stance with dangling arms....?? UKkie hayseed, or otherwise backcountry bumpkin? Culturally stunted? I think you are reading too much into it. It was just meant to be silly.

Just silliness; no satirical jibes at anybody.

Oh Jeeves & Wooster were definitely poking fun at particular archetypes of people in particular social groups.
The Gumbys are more general "is anyone this bad? No, but you know people from anywhere that might have some milder characteristics".

See? That's just it...they are archetypes, I'd bet. Just like the Clampetts and Bertie Wooster.
All this denial that they are over-the-top archetypical satirical representations is just whetting my curiosity to know upon what exemplars they are based. I'd say that they seem to be demeaning stereotypes of rural worker types...dense and unsophisticated..."My brain hurts."

Mmmm, more like a type of character you could fine in any setting, not really so much linked to any specific area or even social group. But that is just my vibe on it. Maybe a sort of early über-anorak.

Many of the Gumbys have Prof. in front of their name and they are doing brain surgery in one sketch. I think it really is all just supposed to be ridiculously silly!

Yes yes yes - The Gumbies. They're the one who declared I was un-loonified today.
I've got Courtney ( my granddaughter ) staying here tonight. She's just gone to bed after having a shower. My khazi now smells like the perfume counter at Selfridges.

I only posted the picture because of the mention of rolled-up trouser legs. I hadn't registered any other connection with the thread as a whole.

How old is Courtney now Alan? I had a bath at my mum's the other day and was a bit bemused to find it full of masculine bathtime products. I guess that Ol has hit that particular age

Redundant. “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” ~ Mark Twain

Hi guys, I'm off to Norwich on Tuesday to spend a couple of days with my daughters. I'm feeling perfectly confident in my ability to ride or drive these days (no more desires to involve myself in a fatal crash). When is the moot in mooseville ?

I think sometime next week but am not sure on dates myself Oliver is fourteen now. He has hit that 'I know it all' age. But he's still engaging company, fun and interesting if you can stir him out of the sulky bit

I think sometime next week but am not sure on dates myself Yeah...Kye noted in another thread that she'd only three or four more days before she flys to UKland. Ah, yes...The angst-ridden sulk and practiced ennui. Hardcore adolescent behavior. Teens are soooo amusing, particularly when they are not mine.

Nor me. *shudders* I liked my early twenties much better! Well, in the span of my early years, the early teens were...disappointing. The late teen years were quite positive, pleasant, and filled with wonderous discoveries. My twenties were emotional rollercoaster hellish. Very turbulent and unsettled. It was during those years that I underwent counseling and antidepressant therapy. I made some of my best life friends, though, and helped accomplish some worthy goals.

I had my year in Japan, then in Deventer and another in Groningen. All good years during which I was popular and had friends. I know people say popularity is shallow, but it's also very nice sometimes. After that came the angst: graduated, figured out what to do with my life, started teaching and had loads of 'Oh heavens, is this what my life is going to look like for the next couple of decades?!? Noooo~!"-moments.

I enjoyed my teenage years and the first year at university but an illness that I contracted through drinking unpasteurized milk marred the next few years. My early 20s were patchy with some good and some bad times (depression, loneliness and the angst I should have had in my teens). Working as a programmer in a young department was a joy.

I could cope with going through them again. There are a vast number of things I could do better, assuming I had some memory of what I know now. Otherwise I'd probably make all the same mistakes again.

I woke up one day at age 22 and the previous 8 years were a blur. There was no emotional or personal connection to anything that happened during that time. I had memories of doing some things and going places, but it was as if it was stuff I had seen in a movie or heard about someone else doing.
I think I blocked out my teens for some reason.

I have that too, but before I was 12 I don't remember much unless I am prompted. Emotions I don't remember at all. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

Heh I remember my teens and childhood very, very clearly, but much less so my twenties I guess memory is different for everyone.

Yes, I remember, and feel I was there, up to age 14, then a break.
The really odd thing was how immediate it was, literally one day I just felt like I could remember better what it was like years previously than the previous week or year, and it had all been a dream for years.

Apparently there's going to be a new Star Trek film. I saw the trailer and thought : this is going to be horrible, before I even knew it was supposed to be Star Trek. *sigh*
