'Tis our Maritime festival this weekend and jolly lousy weather we have for it too. I did pop down earlier and had a look, bought a Tombola ticket and won a teddy bear, grabbed a hot dog and then scurried home cos there were too many people and they all seemed inclined to walk right in front of me. There hsould be fireworks and an air display later tho so I might be able to see them from spare room window

Weather lousy today here too. Windy and rain too. I won a big fat pink sheep once at one of these type of things. What colour is your bear?

You know in Brugge they have a brown bear as their patron but because a guy got drunk once and came back in winter he saw the bear all covered in snow and white and thought he was in the wrong city so went out again. Anyway, they now have a street called white bear (witte beer) and that is where we stayed last Tuesday.

What is a Maritime festival?

Maritime means to do with the sea and shipping, so it's celebrating Whitehaven as a port.

I never buy these tickets because you always win those stuffed toys.

One of the devious things many of those stalls do is say that any ticket ending in zero or five wins, which naturally, gives the impression of a 1 in 5 chance of winning. The reality is that often, a large number of the winning numbers are not in there. It all comes down to how many they leave.
They won't take too many out, however. That way, people are seen wandering about with the toys they have won and that shows people that it is possible to win!

At least a few people here have ever won any prizes from raffle draws - I never won any, but my mom, during a corporate picnic, won both the 1st and the 3rd prizes!

A mosquito bat and a portable, battery and electricity operated lamp. Very useful all year round.

Well this was for charity which is why I bought the tickets in the first place . And as I was leaving a very excited little boy won a huge stuffed rabbit, so I am guessing that they left most of the tickets in there
