Talking about honey on another thread made me think of a guy on my fb feed who has started bee keeping and posts regular pics and updates about it. It's quite fascinating and there's something I like about the idea, even tho I would imagine it's quite difficult and expensive to get started and I doubt that the neighbours or council would like it Anyone know anyone who's ever done it tho?

No. I think someone at my church keeps bees, though.

Just read an article about it recently. Lots of rooftop beekeeping going on in Amsterdam. And apparently most major cities. They have associations and organisations for it. Apparently the initial start up costs are a bit but after that it's quite cheap and not much work. The bees are attracted to cities cos there are still flowers there, ironically enough.

One of the plotholders at the allotment fields my mother is the treasurer of has more than the allowed number of hives (6) on one of his plots.

selling home made honey might be quite lucrative tho. That said I dunno how much the average hive can produce.
