So...The hunt is over and we most definitely have an established overlord. It's time Picard had his own thread here. He just finished drinking out of my water cup. So that's now contaminated with cat spit. He is crapped out, cleaning his paw, on the chair next to me. He just did his evening Tokyo Drift practice, followed by poking around behind the books on the bookshelves, and some boisterous stuffed toy play. He loves his toys. The house is now littered with them. And, he prefers noisy toys. The little bells in plastic baskets WITH feathers attached are big favorites. Mousie on a bungee string gets a lot of attention. He now has a faux SQRL that looks SQRL, unlike his FauxDog, which is SQRL color and size, but is nothing but a half square of faux fur folded and sewn with a heavy seam. The thing is indestructible, which is good, 'cause he tears the crap out of it (the object being to use it instead of our hands). He absolutely loves his FauxDog and carries it from room to room....wherever he wants to amuse himself with malicious mayhem. He prefers fish flavors in his foods. Most food gets eaten, however. He is shifting over to the 'crunchies' fairly well, though. They are available 24/7, too. He is 4.2 pounds and now has all his vaccinations. I guess that means he can start school this fall. He is very hoomin oriented. He can be returned from an unauthorized foray into the back yard by just sitting on the back stoop and allowing him to come over to you. He's learning, though. His biggest goal is to get outside. He wants to break the bonds of Stalag Hoomin. We will relent, so I guess it's a matter of when he gets outside and continues to elude us once out there. He still walks with a swagger...as he has since he entered the place.

It's a holiday weekend (Labor Day...the 'end of summer'), so I might have opportunity and incentive to get some pix.
The last few days, we've been allowing gradually expanded opportunities outdoors in the back yard. His first trip was Tuesday evening and on the leash. The thing is, the leash was fine when he was ten weeks, but at twenty weeks, it's....well, it looked rather like a too small vest on a growing boy. Swimmer took him out, set him down and he promptly keeled over in shame and mortification. When he struggled up, he immediately began wiping his butt across the concrete pad that is part of the patio. (I thought the message was clear, but Swimmer pressed on.) He managed to peramulate, but with me on the end of the leash, hovering. A bad chaperone. Several times, he just fell over in moritification of having to endure such bad fashion. I, of course, was laughing my guts out.
The second trip was off leash and more readily accepted.
Today, he got to wander on his own for an hour, with Swimmer supervising. So, Picard is getting to know the crowd of hens, pullets and cockerels. They all liked it better when he was on a leash. Once they figured that out, he got a lot more close inspection by the youngbloods. Now, he can lunge and make birds scramble. I think he likes that. I doubt he'd appreciate actually connecting with a hen, as they're about triple his weight and size.

So...It seems that Picard has some kind of herder instinct. He's spent his 'free time' over the past couple of days figuring out how the chickens react to various initiatives of his. At times, it actually looks like he's at trials, with chickens, instead of sheep. On point. Angle right to push left. Oops...he didn't cut it hard enough and now part of the flock has split off to the right. On the lawn, looking as nonchalant as possible, thinking that they all come here. "Dere daze comz...once moar tymb!" Okay, I have to admit it...my overlord is a 'chick stalker'. He has spent hours and hours in the backyard stalking and chasing chicks...and cockerels...and hens....and any bug at all. He has yet to meet Gotz, Lady Jane, Spotnose, or even Bruno, the local feline adults. Gotz and Lady Jane are both part Maine Coon, so they're huge, and fluffy.

He's twice the weight he was when we brought him home and he no longer has any protruding boney bits. He's coming along juse fine.
Swimmer is totally enthralled and thinks he's ready to enter kindergarten right now.
The house, as already noted, is littered with cat toyes, all of which he seems to play with and carry about the house.
He likes his hoomins, too. It's actually relatively easy to get him in from outdoors, even if he's against the idea. He wants hoomins around and likes to 'hang out' with us.

Heh... He has spent the afternoon "chook punching". He's got that herder instinct and likes lunging, jumping and chasing. The hens (and pullets and cockerels) all seem quite dismayed, but they are putting up with it. I did have to give him a 'time out' today for pushing Chance, one of my hens, over on to the neighbors' rooftop. After he was corraled inside, she fluttered back over to the fence top. Here's Picard with the youngbloods 'treed'...or more likely, 'fenced'. He thinks he's got them cornered for the time being. He had to do a second 'time out' when I found him sauntering along the fencetop out in the front yard, under the cornus kousa....headed toward the street. This is D'Ora and Cocoa, looking a mite pensive. The neurosis levels are elevated. There has been no actual confrontation, as he's still got them running. I'm surprised that Ingrid hasn't stood her ground, she took on and bested Hobbes, but Picard has got her seeking solitude 'elsewhere'. She didn't like be flushed out once he discovered her. I'm hearing chook protests regularly, so they must really relish his indoor retreats for food and snooze. After a morning of harrassing the chooks, Picard came in on his own, scarfed some pate, and took to one of his nests.

Yeah it is and it all goes just a wee bit too quickly! I'm sure everything is going to end up being done last minute instead of nicely on time.

I know the feeling. Though when I went to Japan, I pretty much had everything in order. But then, I did intend to come back.

I started my week long vacation yesterday and now I am majorly bummed. Picard has been "off his game" the last few days, malingering and reducing his fuel intake. Lassitude set in; he has been 'punky' and not going outside to chase the chickens around. So, we lined him up for a visit to the vet.
Now Picard is on death watch. Although we're hoping for good news, there is a very strong possibility that he has FIP, Feline Infectious Peritonitis. It's a mutated corona virus which attacks the immune system. If he has it, it is not treatable and it's fatal. Blood and fluid samples were taken and sent off to the lab....they can only identify markers for the likelihood of the disease, not definitively identify for a definitive diagnosis, but the course so far fits. With the lassitude, he's running a temp, and had developed the "python look" which we had been laying to overindulgence, but is evidently a build-up of fluid in his abdominal cavity.
I has a major sad. What a fucked up way to start a vacation. **deep sigh**
