People do keep tigers as pets but they tend to declaw and de teeth them. Not cool.

I think they get into the whole thing with having an "exotic" pet. There is a huge problem in many countries with people smuggling endangered snakes, spiders and so on out of their native country (and habitat) to collectors for significant amounts of money. It makes them feel "special" in some way to own them, but if they really cared about the animal they'd not treat it with such contempt.
