All the best Jo. I also need to exercise more, the weather is not helping: I feel 'frozen' when it's below 0; I avoid going out as much as possible. I hate feeling cold. But I desperately need to walk more.

Freezing here and very nasty icy extreme wind. I didn't go out all weekend except to get some stuff from the shops.
Anyway, good luck with the healt plan! Reducing alcohol is good as it has loads of calories. I only have some wine on the weekend now along with sugar and fat, as mentioned in your facebook thread.

I also have to stop hibernating. It doesn't help that I can't go for long walks with my dog anymore. She's too old and tired.

I'm cutting down my alcohol too, not to lose weight but because too much isn't good for me.

I am not missing it which is odd. Am having a beer or two a night but that's all. Then will cut it out entirely.

I found it fairly easy to cut out alcohol some years ago, but then I wasn't having it daily to begin with, so that helped. I just reserved it for special occasions. I've also recently found some snack items which I take to work which keep me away from the vending machines and actually taste good!

Oh yeah, and starting about a year ago, I had some good results using the My Fitness Pal app on my phone. I linked to the website which you can access on your PC though. You put in a goal weight, target weight, and how active you are and it computes how many calories per day you should be eating to reach that goal. As I made progress, it has twice adjusted my calorie target down so that I'd keep losing. I got off track a bit late last summer when my cousins visited and then it wasn't long before it started getting colder out, then the holidays came, etc. Now, I've started to refocus a bit and am trying regain my motivation. I'm only about 7-8 lbs back above my lowest weight from last year, but I've tired of hovering at this point. Am ready to get serious and start dropping the pounds again!

I was thinking of joining WeightWatchers, however, I know of at least 1 student who goes there. That's a big inhibitor. I would also like to start exercising again on my Wii, but where I live now that's not possible.

I haven't been to the gym for a month because of the spot on my back but this week I might be able to make it. I usually go swimming there.

I find that starting a weight loss diet when it's cold is an extra challenge - it seems that reducing my food intake makes me feel colder - I suppose my body is trying to conserve scarce resources by reducing unnecessary body heat production! Happily, this seems to pass after a few days, so all that's necessary is to wear some extra clothes until my body gets used to the new regime and warms up again. I find adding one extra T-shirt under all my existing clothes, plus a longer pair of socks than usual does the trick!

I must remind Col to bring his wii fit with him so I can try that. Tho I shudder to think how much it will tell me I weigh and what my BMI is

It'll get you into shape in no time Though I actually use a different game. The Wii Fit game left me too much room to not do things I should do.

Thank goodness I don't have a Wii. I like to enjoy my exercise and be in control of it.

I was going to bring Wii anyway. Last time I went to do fitness thing it complained that I'd not used it for a couple of months due to being very busy. Then the balance board batteries went flat so I didn't do it again for a while. I started to get annoyed with how fickle it was. One day it would be ecstatic that I'd lost 3 pounds and the next day it would be dead critical that I'd put one back on...

Kaylee and Tangent, you are in control. It just selects a couple of the exercises in a series and you can either do a preselected series or create on yourself. There are several preselected ones yoy can choose from and they are different every day.

I could give one very effective diet advice: get my nasty cold. My appetite is down to zero.

And stress. Stress and anxiety will bring your weight down.

Mari, I have found that Weight Watchers is also a good program. My mother had success with their program and wound up working for them part time for about 25 years. Mrs Shake and I twice tried their online program, which works on a points basis and we both liked how it worked. We felt neither starved nor deprived of anything. Their system focuses on portion control, exercise, and healthy choices, while allowing you to have cheat days without any guilt! Though I think the big thing with most any program is that it gives you a level of accountability. Having someone to join you is also a great benefit!

So how many people on here are on a diet at the moment?

I am not on a diet, but I would like to exercise more. I feel drained recently and would like to feel more energetic. I believe more exercise will do me good. But the weather outside is terrible: it's so cold and I feel worse walking in such cold air.

I can cycle when it is that cold, but anything else I'd rather do inside.

I have been feeling very lethargic for the last couple of weeks. Am starting to pick up again now, but I think a lot of it has been the dark nights and cold weather. Looking forward to walking along the coast up at Moose's.
