Many Americans dearly want him to leave the country but where would he go and who would take him in? From today's Observer*shudders at thought of Trump retiring to his golf course in Scotland*

As long as it's not Canada! (At least the border between Canada and the States is closed.)

I had to take another test in hospital as I have a minor cold. Unfortunately I had the baby before the testresult came back so the midwife and nurses had to be fully covered when in my room. The test came back negative this afternoon by the way.

Infection rates and death rates are going up here. The country is being hard locked down again, one county at a time. You're actually doing quite well up there compared with Manchester, which has three times your infection rate.

I believe this is what the epidemiologists expected when people became confined to indoor spaces when temperatures went down and conditions degraded outdoors.
All those infected now get a better opportunity to infect more clueless innocents because the aerosols are trapped indoors.

My sister and BIL have Covid - she has fairly mild symptoms, he has none. Both are having to isolate of course, so she asked a work friend to drop off some shopping, which she kindly did.
My sister had a brief chat with the friend, who stayed outside the house the whole time and wore a mask. Now the friend had had a notification on the app to self isolate - and miss work - because she has been near someone with Covid! My sister’s employers are not too happy, having two people now off. It’s crazy.

I presume the 'brief chat' was longer than 15 minutes or some such threshold? Either way, that's going to cause some serious resistance to compliance if you can't even get things delivered while self-isolating, without risking them too.

I presume the 'brief chat' was longer than 15 minutes or some such threshold? Either way, that's going to cause some serious resistance to compliance if you can't even get things delivered while self-isolating, without risking them too. Here they recommend the people who deliver anything just leave it in front of the door of the person in quarantine. Health services are overwhelmed here with tracking all the cases. And some politicians are suggesting an obligation to download and use the tracing app, including a fine for failure to do so. This scares me a little. I might be considered irresponsible, but I don't have the app. With my anxiety, I doubt ai could cope with updates such as "you've had a contact, but probably nothing happened". We are careful and see few people, aside from my standing in for teachers at the school and church (where we have to give them our dlname and phone number when attending the service so the church can take action if they hear about someone with Covid-19) and I could at any time tell health services where I was throughout the past 10 days and who I met. But I fear the app may make my anxiety skyrocket. Not sure if it's still OK to watch out for your own mental health at this point, though.

The problem I had with "you've had a contact, but probably nothing happened" has now been sorted. It was a software issue with Google that the developers didn't know about before the app was used in earnest. Now, I find the app boring. It never tells me anything, which is how I like it. Perhaps because I don't normally meet people.

So what does the app base exposure on? Time and proximity? If so, what would happen if you were, say, waiting in your car next to someone waiting in *their* car, enclosed but less than 2 metres, who later tested positive?

Short answer, tough.
The app depends on the strength of Bluetooth signals between the two people. The Bluetooth transmitters switch to low strength signals to save power when the phone detects it is close enough to the receiver. In free air, that distance is thought to be two metres but with two car doors in between, it is less than that, perhaps only one metre. So they are unlikely to trigger the app.

Special KWe are entering a new, enhanced restrictions 'freeze'. Our governor issued orders for a new four week lockdown, closing restaurants and gathering spots and mandating masking and social distancing, backed this time with threats of fines and incarceration.

Re-infection is possible but it is thought to be very rare thanks to the memory T cells. Studies have shown that, whilst antibodies don't last very long - typically three to six months - T cells are present for much longer. People infected with the SARS virus have been shown to retain memory T cells for more than ten years and since Covid-19 is closely related to the original SARS virus, there is good reason to believe that Covid-19 T cells will also last ten or more years.

We ended the official 2nd lockdown a while back, but London is just going into "Tier 3" of the new restrictions.
Not enough people are sensible, and I'm afraid there's going to be a surge after Christmas.

There is a new Covid variant which is prevalent in London and the South East, which may be more infectious. But it's not thought to be more lethal nor invalidate the vaccine.

I'm sitting on my bum at home for a couple of days waiting for results after I got tested for Covid on Monday. One of my parishioners has tested positive. I don't think she gave me anything --I haven't seen her for a couple of weeks, but I wanted to make sure, just in case.
