I have just seen Office 2013 and I think it's the most unusable version of Office I've even seen. No-one in the office can find anything in it any more. M$ have really lost the plot! Which is why I stuck to Office 2003, the last usable version. Which is why I switched to Open Office! It's free, open-source, and compatible with MS Office. Plus there are periodic updates (also free). It even looks like MS Office. Did I mention it's free?

I think the world would be fine, but for many of the people in it. You are right there.

I switched over when the stagnation happened with the OpenOffice project. The LibreOffice project has been worked on more at this point and seems better in my opinion, although they are by and large the same.

We just got a new laptop and it has windows 8 which looks funny. We managed to change some of it around to something more user friendly. Anyways, it is DG's laptop technically as I have my own but his has been dead for about a year so really well overdue for a new one. I'm not sure what version of office but I'll keep in mind Shake's Open Office thingy.

I used Windows 8 the other day. There is no way I could work productively with it as it has been made very slow and cumbersome to use!

it's terrible! I couldn't even figure out how to shut down or restart the computer!

Ugh, a Windows Vista mishap again? You'd think they'd learn. I was surprised at how well Windows 7 turned out.

I think they are falling foul of their own desire to look like they are innovating and doing new things, when in reality almost everything they do is a copy of something someone else has done, something they bought because it was starting to make an impact on their business or re-skinning things to make them look different (to cover up the fact that they've done nothing else to it).

I think I'll do my usual thing where I stick with one OS until the next decent one comes out. I've gone from 95 to XP and now to 7, skipping all of the intermediate releases.

Frank bought a ne laptop yesterday since his was about 8 years old. He has Windows 8 and it's taking him time to figure it out.

98 was much better than 95.
Windows 8 is like using a massive mobile phone, which is a very bad thing!

That's basically what Frank said.

I'm still on Windows XP. People at my church keep asking me how to fix their Windows 7 problems and I just have to admit I don't know.

I have XP on my primary home computer, Vista on the mini-laptop, and Windows 7 at work. I am fine with all of those. Have not properly tried W8, but it certainly seems more different from the others than they are from each other. From what I have heard it's fine for touchscreens, but a real hassle with regular PC's.

I got to play with W8 in my local PC World. I was rattling through things, giving off a deliberate air of "come near me and I'll ask you things I know you don't know" (not that it's hard to be more qualified than the staff there)! I was seriously underwhelmed and it felt more like a toy than a productivity tool. IF it wasn't for lack of device drivers and people making programs that refuse to run below XP (as opposed to actually requiring XP and up) I'd still be running Windows2000, as it is massively faster on the same machine. Win98 would be even better, but the security isn't there (not that any windows system is secure, unless you go out of your way to make it better).

I have XP on my laptop and Windows7 on my desktop. I made sure to buy an XP laptop before they all switched to Vista >_<

XP support ends on 8 April 2014. I imagine there will be many die-hards hanging on after that date. W7 is okay from what I have seen, but when things go wrong, it is turning into a nightmare to maintain. In my view, any operating system that includes a built-in tool for fixing it when it goes wrong is not taking the right approach.

Win 7 isn't bad, but at work it's caused a lot of headaches adapting our test software to run properly on it. Our test engineers are keeping busy. Hm ... that reminds me that I have to double check something, then send an email to them about my workstation (which has been upgraded to 7).

Isn't it still better than Windows Vista?

Windows Vista sucks big time. My grandmother has it (against my explicit advice, but of course my dad knew better *rolleyes*) and her computer is soooooo dreadfully slooooooow!
