Apparently the BBC, in what they are swearing was an accident, initially announced on its website that Thatcher had died from a 'strike'.

The Coalition obviously had to be formed at the time but it should have been a stopgap pending another general election, but no, somehow he managed to persuade parliament to allow him a full 5 year term with his LibLab puppet and proceeded to bring in far reaching measures for which he had no mandate. Grrrr..........

The Lib Dems have really damaged their credibility beyond all reasonable prospect of repair I think

The Lib Dems have really damaged their credibility beyond all reasonable prospect of repair I think They have, yes, but their only other option was to block changes which would have promoted recovery from the recession and that would have been bad for the UK. Nick Clegg's face was glum when he realised the position he was the day after the election. The worst possible result for the Lib Dems.

Probably neither does the Mail I was talking with my mum about Thatcher yesterday and she said that she - Lady T - just did not care about anyone other than the wealthy. When she got into power my parents were a single income lower middle class family with two children - my dad being a teacher, my mum a stay at home mum, as was common then. She said that their mortgage payments went through the roof under Thatcher.

No nor Cameron unless he's changed his mind. Is anyone enamoured of Cameron? Presumably his mother likes him

I see that the Mail are campaigning for her to be given a state funeral tho I don't quite know on what grounds. I object to my taxpayer's money being spent on this, and on the massive amount of security that they are going to have to draft in to cope with the inevitable protests/riots that it will provoke. Someone that divisive should just be seen off in a tasteful, quiet, private do. Anything else is just asking for trouble.

Yes I can imagine that there will inevitably be trouble and I don't see why such a big thing is being made of it.

There have been complaints that the BBC's tribute mentioned strikes and the poll tax, as though nothing bad happened during her reign. We must never forget that a huge number of people's lives were ruined during her period as prime minister even if the country as a whole prospered.

All the more reason to go for a small quiet funeral I'd think. And the Queen attending is a bit .. political. That said, they were the same age and, tho from totally different backgrounds, they were the two leading figures in the country for a while. Rumour always had it that they did not get along but I dunno how reliable rumour is.

Sounds like a case of "The operation was a complete success, but the patient died." The state funeral idea was put forward at least as far back as July 2008 and I couldn't understand why then...

I just watched the BBC's tribute to Margaret Thatcher shown on Monday evening. I found the coverage well balanced and very informative.
