I could technically save up and buy a new mower and in the long run it would be cheaper but it means finding a good seventy quid in one go

Even if you bought a second-hand one you'd only need to use it long enough to save the money for the new one.

yeah .. but as it stands I pay someone a tenner a month to do the grass. Realistically that's only about forty a summer and a mower is twice that.

Oy. It's 37 C here now. Had to put on shorts.

I put on shorts when it reaches 27 C ... I can only think of one time I've experienced 37 C, in Shingwedzi in the far north of South Africa (in the tropics).

I've been sleeping poorly too. My bedroom is at the top of the house and heat rises.

I've been sleeping poorly too. My bedroom is at the top of the house and heat rises. Time for a cot in the basement!

Our bedroom cools down about 4 o'clock in the morning so I tend to sleep late. It's quite pleasant outside now.

I don't want to sleep in the basement. It's unfinished and damp.

I was putting stuff in my closet last night and it occurred to me how lovely and cool it seemed in there. I was tempted to sleep in there

My bedroom is actually pretty okay. I have very good drapes keeping most of the sun and heat out and windows on the opposite side as well to let the breeze pass through. My living room is hell though.

Our bedroom cools down nicely during the night, although it's a bit too warm at midnight.

I've bought a USB-powered fan to sit on my desk. It helps ... but it's still hot!

The USB is very high tech for something like a fan.

My living room is okay at night at the moment, but if I sleep on the sofa my joints will fall apart. I already ache loads in the heat.

Well...I just checked and a 5000 BTU portable window air conditioner, suitable to cool a 10 ft. by 15 foot indoor space, runs about $120 (~ 90 lbs.) That was my answer to the miserable three to four weeks of miserable hot weather each summer...17 years later, I still have my working portable air conditioner.

USB as a source of power is lower tech (if much more modern) than a 13-amp plug.
I am quite taken with the USB missile launchers you can get ... fire foam darts from your PC.

One of these? Only place I've seen one is on the Big Bang Theory where Penny uses one to shoot at Sheldon.

Better than yesterday here, but needs a bit of a tweak still. Not looking forward to hotter weekend, assuming they are right about it.

It's 31C here. Not as bad as a couple of days ago, but hotter than I like it. I need a pool and a pina colada!

Deborah has closed the open window next to the computer because the air coming in was too cold. Sadly the rest of the house is still a bit too warm but it will cool down overnight.

I basically passed out on the sofa for about 45 minutes last night, then managed to drag myself to bed. It was not too bad yesterday, but I have just taken about 70 minutes to wake up enough to get downstairs and all my aches are back with a vengeance. I am not looking forward to it getting an warmer!
