I've been following a fb thread - with my blood pressure rising accordingly - in which someone stated that Catholics who voted for Obama were wrong and should have listened to what the church said on the matter. It rather appalls me to think that churches consider they have the right to tell people how they must vote (and will appeal to their consciences if they vote against the church line) though I know fine well that Protestant churches do this as well. What do people think of this?

To parrot another FB soundbite, if they want to get involved in politics they can give up their tax-exempt status first.
But talk about unconstitutional.

Politics is about what is possible, not about principal ... know any politicians with principals? Eh? ... I left my party when I was accepted for ordination training because I have to be there for all my congregation. I still reserve the right to question the morality of particular policies and challenge people to think about what they are voting for but I absolutely will not endorse any one politician as against any other.
Our local elected person (to the High and Glorious Diet of Mordor) has been to meet the Deanery Chapter (of clergy) and put up quite a good performance with a much more truculent audience than she usually gets. I thought she was a decent sort with a genuine heart for the local problems in the deanery but I still would not vote for her personally.

I have to admit I'm sick of all these discussions at the moment. They have been making me feel bad and there has been way too much judging going on.

I was rather surprised to see that the Catholics generally were in greater support of the President, what with him supporting a woman's right to choose, and gay rights.

What I found difficult was this black and white view of the Obama and Romney, that it sounded like one of them was the redeemer to people while the other one seemed to represent Satan. It sounded like it was that extreme.

Extreme views are always a problem and (almost) nothing is totally black and while. What makes it difficult is when people conflate issues and see everything through a prism. A little bit of objectivity and humility goes a long way..

What do people think of this? Not only do they not have the right, it's actually illegal. Churches, synagogues, etc. in this country are tax-exempt, and one of the conditions for this is that they not endorse candidates from the pulpit. So technically they could lose their tax-exempt status. It has happened, but only to small evangelical churches. The IRS official publication on the matter says:

This is obviously a good idea. Ironic that when you go to such lengths to keep religion out of politics it often ends up so political

I am now getting Obama is evil and more 'there should be a recount' shite Only if W, Dickhead Cheney, Rummy, and Alberto Gonzales are all shipped in manacles to the ICC in Den Hague to stand trial for crimes against humanity and war crimes. I'd be willing to throw in Madeline Albright and Bill Clinton as part of a bipartisan package deal.

OK, I'm also tired of politics, I just deleted all my high school acquaintances to get rid of the stupid.

I've bunged off everyone who has called or agreed with Obama being evil over the last 24 hours. I have no problem with people not supporting him but evil? FFS.

I don't get that either. Why would anyone think him evil? Wrong maybe, not relgious enough maybe, but why evil?

Apparently he's going to have all good Catholics put up against the wall and shot

Funny, I thought he was going to put up everyone up against a wall and shot? Or the death panel equivalent.

Have to be a very big wall.

Obviously. Just think of the extra evil points he can amass just by building a wall that big.

Well it would temporarily sort the unemployment problem that he's apparently also going to create/exacerbate

Have to be a very big wall. We had folks here who wanted one built along our southern border. For real.

Obviously. Just think of the extra evil points he can amass just by building a wall that big. We have Hadrian's Wall to keep out the Scots He could build one all the way along the Canadian border... that'd be pretty darned huge!
